Bandwidth Bandits
When
files are uploaded to or downloaded from servers, internet
bandwidth is used to transmit the files through the network at
specified speeds. Whenever you are surfing the Web, uploading a
file to your ISP or use an audio/video application, you are
utilizing the bandwidth.
Bandwidth is a set of wires or fibers connecting the systems to
a network. The quantum of data transmitted through the network
where you have hosted your website, is dependent on the quality
of the wires. When somebody tries to extract more data than the
quantum the network can handle, then the entire network will
become slow.
ISPs will either impose limits on bandwidth use at specified
periods during peak hours, or charge a fixed monthly fee for
usage of bandwidth. When your usage is over and above this fixed
fee, extra charges are applicable for extra bandwidth used.
Certain ISPs will cease to transmit until network traffic
becomes steady.
Your website can be downloaded with most of the files such as
image, audio, video, flash and other programs. Pop-ups, banners,
and particular documents and images which have to be downloaded
from a central server, do not come under this purview.
Bandwidth bandits link their images and other files to some
other server rather than their local server. There may be many
reasons for them to do like this but the main reason is to
obtain maximum bandwidth possible for showing their images and
links. This is tantamount to stealing the bandwidth, as they are
stealing images or files every time the website is being
activated.
You can prevent such persons from stealing your bandwidth
allotment by adopting various methods. You may contact them
personally on their email; also you can peruse the Network
Solutions and make an IP search which will enable you to trace
the persons’ particulars and their website registration. You may
also contact the company who is hosting their website.
Bandwidth can be costly and certainly you don’t want somebody
stealing it.
