Ecommerce Web Hosting Review
Ecommerce Web Hosting Review
Today, we will discuss and review ecommerce web hosting options and perhaps how they differ from other web hosting packages available. Ecommerce web hosting is the solution you should be seeking if you wish to provide a large number of products online as well as “merchant” transactions involving credit cards or other forms of payment.
Ecommerce web hosting is likely the most involved web hosting solution available. I have built countless websites, but an ecommerce solution can get very complicated. Not only is a webmaster concerned about hosting the sales pages, but there is a connection to the merchant account for the credit cards and then delivery. Additionally, we are concerned with correct inventory, availability and delivery. Federal Express and UPS connections can also be involved, of course; another huge consideration with programming.
There are probably more than this, but two prevalent schools of thought come to mind when designing an ecommerce website. One is to setup a dedicated service and incorporate a shopping cart solution. Another, is to simply seek an already established solution such a 1ShoppingCart.com or any of the other top shopping cart providers out there. Yes, they have been doing this for a long time and have the experience and staff to support your ecommerce web hosting. But, the negative is that they charge a large fee to provide these services to you.
A strong and experienced webmaster can setup an ecommerce web hosting package on a dedicated server and plug in the necesary code to facilitate the shopping cart experience. Additionally, as mentioned earlier, shipping and handling can be incorporated as well. To pull in shipping companies and setup the merchant account is usually an additional charge. Perform your homework well, setup a business plan and learn this upfront. Don’t be enticed by the free or cheap web hosting packages that share server resources with other companies and think you can host an ecommerce site on this and win. You will be sorely disappointed.
Plan for growth when thinking about an ecommerce web hosting solution. The database “backend” required for your product inventory may get huge! This, in many circumstances, may require a separate database server on it’s own! Your ecommerce business may grow into this in time (hopefully,) but you should be aware of the ramifications in recurring expenses. To succeed in ecommerce, don’t think small-scale. Think big and you’ll succeed big. But, you must also plan accordingly!
